What Will You Do This GivingTuesday?

This year’s GivingTuesday is a little over a week away and if you haven’t yet thought about what you are going to do to “give back”, it’s not too late!

GivingTuesday follows the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales events that occur during the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend as a commercial kick off and run up to the Christmas holiday season.

“We have two days that are good for the economy. Now we have a day that is good for the community too.”

It is a new Canadian movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday. The “Opening day of the giving season”, it is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others.

GivingTuesday was started in Canada in 2013 by a group of organizations including GIV3, CanadaHelps.org, and now includes nearly 5,000 partners.  The Volunteer Airdrie Society is a partner in this year’s GivingTuesday campaign and a member of CanadaHelps.

Over 1,300 partners came together for the inaugural GivingTuesday in Canada in 2013, over 3,200 in 2014 and 4,700 in 2015. The movement also went global, with activities in over 70 countries and endorsements from The White House, Bill Gates and the Clinton Foundation.  The impact of last year’s GivingTuesday campaign is summarized in the following infographic:

At tomorrow’s Airdrie City Council meeting, the mayor will proclaim that Tuesday, November 29, 2016 is GivingTuesday in the City of Airdrie.

This year’s slogan is “Be Part of Something BIG”.
