“We Are Neighbours Helping Neighbours”

Airdrie Food Bank

The Airdrie Food Bank was established in March 1984 when local churches signaled a critical need. A member of each church was recruited to the board. Donations of food and money came from the congregations to fill hampers. The Anglican Church provided a room for the Food Bank with storage in various locations.

The Airdrie Food Bank worked hard to meet the drastically increased demand for food services and programs. For years they have been in urgent need of additional space to continue to meet the growing needs of those struggling in our community. With the support of our community they now have a new purpose-built facility! It opened in August 2014 and the Grand Opening was in November 2014. It took an entire community to build the new and improved Airdrie Food Bank located at 20 East Lake Way Airdrie, AB T4A 2J3.

The Airdrie Food Bank is now in the process of expanding its services to include more skill building programs by providing a Community Kitchen, which it plans to share with the community.

The Airdrie Food Bank’s work has been recognized with several awards, including:

  • Best Local Cause: Airdrie City View Reader’s Choice Award – 2009 to 2015
  • Best Fundraising Event – Empty Bowls: Airdrie City View Reader’s Choice Award – 2011 to 2015
  • Volunteer Advocate Award from the City of Airdrie in 2012

In 2015, The Airdrie Food Bank provided:

  • 1,814 hampers to 2,927 adults (55%) and 2,374 (45%) children
  • Bread and extras to 5,438 families (average of 105 families each week)
  • 50 emergency packs (distributed by agencies/churches)
  • 16,270 snack attack items & $6,000 in gift cards given to 22 schools
  • 3,765 breakfasts to elementary school students (aged 5 to 10) through the R.J.Hawkey Breakfast Program

To make it work, the Airdrie Food Bank’s volunteers contribute nearly 11,000 hours per year.  Volunteering at the Airdrie Food Bank is a great opportunity for families and groups.  For more information about the volunteer program, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator Carolyn at 403-948-0063 or volunteers@airdriefoodbank.com.  Also, connect with them through Facebook and Twitter.
